South Africa at a Glance

South Africa occupies the southern tip of the African continent, covering 1.22 million km² — roughly twice the size of France. It has three capital cities (Pretoria for executive government, Cape Town for the legislature, and Bloemfontein for the judiciary), 11 official languages, and a population of approximately 62 million people.

The country’s extraordinary geographic variety — from alpine mountains to desert dunes, from subtropical coast to Mediterranean winelands — means that effective trip planning pays real dividends. Different regions have very different ideal visiting times, activities, and practical considerations.

South Africa is generally an easy country to travel independently. Roads are well-maintained by African standards, English is widely spoken, the tourist infrastructure is well-developed in key destinations, and the hospitality is genuinely warm.

Common Questions About Plan Your Trip to South Africa

For a standard 2-week trip, booking 3–6 months ahead is ideal — this gives you access to the best flight prices and the widest choice of accommodation, particularly for popular destinations like Kruger and Cape Town in peak season (December–January). For travel over South African school holidays (especially December/January, Easter, and July), book as far ahead as possible — some lodges sell out 12 months in advance. Last-minute deals can be found in the shoulder seasons (April–May and September–October).
South Africa can accommodate a very wide range of budgets. Budget travellers using hostels, self-catering accommodation, public transport, and self-drive Kruger can manage on approximately R1,000–R1,500 per person per day (roughly £40–£60 or $50–$80). A comfortable mid-range trip with guesthouses, rental car, and guided activities costs approximately R3,000–R6,000 per person per day. Luxury travel with private game lodges and top-end hotels can run R15,000–R50,000+ per person per day.
South Africa does not require any vaccinations for entry (unless you are arriving from a yellow fever endemic country, in which case a yellow fever certificate is required). However, recommended vaccinations include Hepatitis A and B, typhoid, and ensuring your routine vaccinations (tetanus, measles, etc.) are up to date. If you’re visiting malaria-risk areas (Kruger, Limpopo, northern KwaZulu-Natal), anti-malarial medication is strongly advised. Consult a travel health clinic 6–8 weeks before departure.
